Staff Who Cannot Grow with the Church
How should leaders respond when staff members are unable to grow with the evolving needs of the church?
As a church grows and matures, leadership needs and team dynamics often shift. In some seasons, certain individuals are essential to building foundational momentum, much like scaffolding supports the construction of a structure. However, as the organization develops, not every team member will be equipped or called to sustain the next phase of growth.
Leaders should first seek to steward people well by exploring opportunities for realignment. This may include lateral moves into roles that better match a person’s strengths, gifting, or leadership capacity. Thoughtful repositioning can allow individuals to continue contributing meaningfully while preserving team health and forward momentum.
At times, however, growth may require difficult decisions. When individuals consistently resist necessary change, limit future ministry potential, or foster ongoing dissatisfaction, it can create a ceiling on organizational effectiveness. In these situations, wise and compassionate leadership may involve helping someone transition out of the organization with dignity and care. Healthy transitions often occur through gracious communication, practical support, and a commitment to honor the individual’s contribution without fostering negativity.
Ultimately, sustaining a culture that embraces growth, adaptability, and unity is essential for long-term ministry impact.
