Planning Ahead While Staying Open to the Spirit
Why long-range planning and Spirit-led moments work together, not against each other.
It is a myth that the Holy Spirit only operates in the moment. He is part of the planning process too. Some pastors use "flowing with the Spirit" as an excuse for not planning. In reality, more planning creates more opportunities for Spirit-led moments, not fewer.
At Highlands, we plan at least three months ahead for content, series, and sermon topics. This gives our creative teams the runway they need to produce excellent graphics and video support. It also preserves full freedom in the room to interrupt a service, add a song, or cut a sermon short when the Spirit leads.
Think of a classical musician. They practice so much that they no longer have to think during the performance. The preparation is what makes them available in the moment.
