Managing Demands While Growing
How to protect your time and scale your leadership as the church grows.
Establish non-negotiables you will not give away regardless of how much the church grows. Mornings, Sabbath, and family time stay protected no matter what.
When people request a meeting, start by asking, "What is it about?" You can often solve it in two minutes standing up. When the request really belongs to someone else on the team, redirect with grace: "Would you mind meeting with your campus pastor first?"
If pressed, use a compassionate explanation: "If I said yes to every meeting, I would have no time to study for the sermon you love so much." Sometimes the right question is, "Do you trust me?" Then remind them that the team is just as qualified.
The secret to scalability is leadership. You will only grow to the number of people you can lead, not the number of people you can reach. The goal is to spend ninety percent of your work week with your leadership team, not with every person who wants your time.
