Hiring – Four Types of People to Look For

What qualities should leaders prioritize when hiring staff for ministry?

Healthy hiring decisions begin with seeing beyond a person’s current capabilities and discerning the full scope of value they can bring to the team and mission. Effective ministry hiring often reflects four key dimensions of value.

Potential Value refers to a leader’s ability to see growth capacity and future leadership in a candidate. Hiring should be guided by vision for who someone can become, not just who they are today. If potential is not clearly evident, long-term development will be difficult to sustain.

Positive Value emphasizes relational strength and emotional presence. Ministry is fundamentally a people-centered environment, and team members must contribute energy, warmth, and encouragement. Individuals who naturally elevate the atmosphere and connect well with others help build healthy culture.

Production Value focuses on demonstrated initiative and execution. Strong candidates are often already serving with excellence before they are formally hired. High-performing volunteers frequently make strong staff members because they have already shown ownership, consistency, and the ability to follow through.

Personal Value reflects relational chemistry and spiritual discernment. Leaders should pay attention to the natural sense of connection or alignment they feel with potential hires. Kingdom work is deeply relational, and trusted partnerships often form through Spirit-led connection.

As a guiding principle, leaders should avoid hiring individuals they would not willingly spend time with outside of work, as relational friction can undermine long-term effectiveness.
