Distinguishing God's Voice from Personal Ambition
How to tell the difference between personal ambition, good opportunities, and what God is calling you to do.
The greatest discipline in leadership is not saying yes to opportunities, it is saying no. Not everything you can do, you should do. The goal is to find your lane and stay true to who you are and to the grace God has placed on your church.
Church of the Highlands is not a great songwriting church, so we never forced it. Not every church needs Highlands College or every specific ministry someone else is doing well. Watch for where God is putting His hand. The greatest frustration in ministry is chasing something God is not blessing.
Highlands focuses on four things: great weekend services, groups, events that build groups, and dream teams. Our common denominator is that we develop leaders at every level. It is better to be the best at one thing than to run a buffet trying to do everything.
As Lin Yutang said, "The wisdom of life consists in the elimination of the non-essentials." When you are young, you can explore more. As the years go by, narrow your focus.
David Green of Hobby Lobby invested in Highlands after hearing how God's hand was on the church. Use patience as a weapon to force deception to reveal itself, and never take your eye off the basics: great weekend services and a strong assimilation process.
